- South facing materials age fastest.
- Have no direct ground to wood contact.
- Look for peeling paint and loose caulking.
- Replace caulk-do not just go over the old caulk-remove the old caulk and then add new caulk.
- Caulking is what keeps water out of your home.
- Use good caulk; cheap caulk will not last.
- Maintain a positive grade away from your house.
- Look for cracks in brick or foundation mortar. If you find any cracks, monitor them to see if they get any larger. The cracks may be nothing or they may be signs of the building settling.
- Look for wood decay, piles of sawdust from carpenter ants and termite tubes.
- Clean the outside of your house with a cleaning solution such as TSP and bleach. (Be careful around lawn and shrubs.) A power washer can be rented to speed up the job. This will help clean up and removes dirt, dust, cocoons etc...and will help preserve whatever siding and trim you have. Be very careful when using a power washer on vinyl or aluminum siding.
